Fashion industry titan and pop culture icon Anna Wintour announced to Vogue staffers in a meeting Thursday that she would be seeking a new head of editorial content at the magazine – stepping down from her position as editor-in-chief of the glossy she has headed for almost 40 years.

Wintour, Women’s Wear Daily reported first, will remain on in her position as global editorial director of the “fashion bible” in addition to her job as chief content officer for Condé Nast – a roll that includes overseeing all brands in the vast Condé empire: Wired, Vanity Fair, GQ, AD, Condé Nast Traveler, Glamour, Bon Appétit, Tatler, World of Interiors, and Allure.

A source familiar told Mediaite that the “addition of a new editorial leader on the U.S. Vogue team will allow” Wintour, 75, “more time to support the markets more equally, in addition to leading all titles at Condé Nast (with the exception of The New Yorker).”

Vogue’s parent company created the “global director” role in a restructuring four years ago.  The American branch of the magazine will now seek to replace Wintour in the “head of editorial content” position. Each global market’s editorial content chief will continue to report Wintour.
