Biden Celebrates American Spirit While Speaking to Press After Released Prisoners Land on US Soil
President Joe Biden took questions from assembled members of the White House press corps minutes after greeting Evan Gershkovich and others released from Russian captivity after a multi-national prisoner swap occurred Thursday.
“Anyone who’s lost family or worried about whether family have come home, whatever the circumstance was, has to understand that extreme,” Biden said, before lauding the importance of family. “And you’ve heard me say it before. My dad used to say, ‘Family is the beginning of the end,’ really is about who you are, but who we are as a country.”
When asked about his message to Vladimir Putin, Biden replied with his signature one-word “Stop.”
On his message to the American people, Biden added, “There’s nothing beyond our capacity to react to that. Nothing. Nothing? Nothing. We are the United States of America. The United States of America, put back together with countries we haven’t had for. Rebuilt NATO. We rebuilt the circumstances to allow this to happen. That’s why it happened. “
Vice President Kamala Harris, and presumptive Democratic nominee, offered a brief statement at the end of the press availability, saying of the complicated prisoner swap:
It’s testament that we prioritized under Joe Biden’s leadership in our administration, which is the importance of building alliances, building the strength that we have through diplomacy to have outcomes like this. And there’s so much at stake right now in our country and in this upcoming election, including who has which approach to understanding America’s strength. This is an example of the strength of American leadership in bringing nations together.
