Biden Has One-Word Answer When Reporter Asks ‘Would You Drop Out if Trump Drops Out?’
President Joe Biden walked back comments he made at a fundraiser about whether he’d be running if ex-President Donald Trump were not and had a one-word answer when a reporter asked, “Would you drop out if Trump drops out?”
President Biden set tongues wagging with a comment made during an off-camera fundraising reception in Boston on Tuesday.
Biden wound up his 20-minute speech by saying, “If Trump wasn’t running, I’m not sure I’d be running. But we cannot let him win for the sake of the country.”
The president spoke to reporters on the South Lawn of the White House as he arrived on Marine One Tuesday night, and was immediately grilled about those remarks, and other topics.
One reporter asked if he’d still be running if Trump weren’t — and then asked if he’d drop out should Trump do the same. Per pool report:
Biden stepped off Marine One at 9:31 pm. He walked over to talk to press gathered at the arrival.
Q: Would you be running for President if Trump wasn’t running?
Biden: “I expect so but look. He is running and I have to run.”
Q: Would you drop out if Trump drops out?
Biden: “No, not now.”
Q: What’s the latest on the American hostages in Gaza?
Biden: “We’re talking to Qataris. I don’t know where this is going to go. We’re not giving up.”
Q: Does Hamas have all eight or are other groups holding them?
Biden: “There’s others. Look, I’m not going to talk more about it. We’re not walking away.”
Q: Have you talked to anyone on the Hill on Ukraine funding?
Biden: “Yes, a couple. Look, the failure to, the failure to support Ukraine is just absolutely crazy. It’s against U.S. interests.” “It’s just wrong.” “We’re going to get that in.”
President Biden has often cited Trump’s remarks after the racist Charlottesville rally as the catalyst for his decision to run for the presidency in 2020.
