The Texas GOP’s redistricting mission is complete.
Gov. Greg Abbott (R) signed the Lone Star State’s new redistricted maps that favor Republicans into law on Friday, the Associated Press reports, in a move that is expected to help the GOP win up to five more seats in Congress in the 2026 election.
The hotly disputed move led dozens of Democrats to flee the state to toss a monkey wrench into an initial vote on the redrawn maps.
They returned about two weeks later amid threats to arrest them. Back in Austin, they were ordered to have a state police detail.
Outside the state, prominent Democrats like Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker and California Gov. Gavin Newsom rebuked the effort, with the latter vowing to lead a similar effort favoring Dems in the Golden State.
Newsom’s initiative passed on Aug. 21.
