Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill Passes House After Hakeem Jeffries’s Hours-Long Speech to Delay Vote
President Donald Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill appears to have passed the House on Thursday with a final vote of 218 in favor and 214 against. Two Republicans voted against the budget.
The vote followed House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries launching into a marathon “magic minute” speech at around 5:00 a.m. in an attempt to delay the vote. Jeffries holds the title for the longest House floor speech, beating the previous record of eight hours and 32 minutes by Kevin McCarthy.
A new draft of the bill passed through the Senate earlier this week.
“Because that debate was so limited, I feel the obligation, Mr. Speaker, to stand on this House floor and take my sweet time to tell the stories of the American people,” Jeffries said.
Democratic lawmakers spent most of Wednesday taking to the House floor and objecting to the budget bill, raising alarms about federal cuts to Medicaid and other programs.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) responded to Jeffries in the House on Thursday by touting 2017 tax cuts being extended in the bill and claimed cuts to federal programs would only be aimed at waste and fraud. People in need of “critical” programs, he said, would not need to “compete” for benefits.
The bill has faced some Republican resistance as well from lawmakers like Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) who have objected to the raising of the debt ceiling. Massie voted against the bill on Thursday, along with Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA).
Trump and Johnson had set a July 4 deadline to pass the bill.
