Brutal Trump Impression Draws Laughs At Anti-Trump Conference: ‘We Love Babies — Maybe Not The Mexican Ones’

An impression of former President Donald Trump making racist remarks about IVF drew laughs at a conference for anti-Trump Republicans.

The 2024 Principles First Summit kicked off this week, and featured such Never Trump luminaries as George Conway, Sarah Matthews, former Rep. Adam Kinzinger, and many more doing panel discussions on protecting democracy from Trump and those who support him.

In a panel featuring Sarah Longwell, A.B. Stoddard, and Jonathan Last of The Bulwark, Last brought up the Alabama Supreme Court decision ruling that embryos frozen for IVF treatments are actual children, and destroying them can be considered wrongful death.

Last called the issue a “loser” for Democrats and illustrated the point with an impression of Trump:

JONATHAN LAST: I think this is 100% loser for Democrats.

SARAH LONGWELL: Okay, I got one. I want to hear it.

JONATHAN LAST: So Donald Trump has basically come out and openly defied the the furthest elements of pro-life incorporated on this. Right. He said the IVF is great.

He’s called on the Alabama state legislature to rectify this horrible law and horrible wrong, and pass a law protecting IVF and nobody from like far out, rad trad pro-life world is going to crack back on him.

They’re all going to say it’s fine, and this is then going to create a halo effect for the rest of the Republicans running, because right now you have a split.

Some people in the Senate, like Daines, are now reversing themselves and pretending that they they don’t like this. But you got 125 Republicans in the House who are still on board with a cosign to a bill that would essentially create personhood for for embryos.

And those people, I think, will get to benefit from Trump’s halo. Right. So that — well, sure, my rep says this crazy thing, but I don’t have to worry about it because Trump, you know, Trump is really super pro-IVF. But– do you want me to read it? Do you want me to do that, read the thing I did?

SARAH LONGWELL: Read the thing. Yeah, yeah it’s funny.

JONATHAN LAST: So I took a turn as as Trump speechwriter on Threads this morning. I’m sitting on the train coming down, and some of you responded to one of the things I said.

“I bet you $1,000. Trump couldn’t even tell you what IVF is!”

And I–

(adopts Trump voice) “My understanding is that they take the baby, the very small baby– some say even smaller than the baby Jesus.

(laughter)

And they inject it right into the mother. And it’s beautiful. It’s a beautiful thing. We love babies. Maybe not the Mexican ones.

(laughter)

You can’t say that! Fake news gets very upset when you say that. But the Mexican IVFs should stay in Mexican!”

(laughter)

So this is. But we’ll just do this. And also, every minute that you’re you’re litigating this stuff, you’re not talking about Dobbs, right? This is — I just think it’s lose, lose, lose. For the Democrats.
