‘Delay, Deny, Defend’ Book Cited On CEO Killer’s Shell Casings Surges To #3 On Amazon Bestsellers List

Deny

A decade-old book critical of the insurance industry has skyrocketed to the number three spot on Amazon’s nonfiction bestseller list as of Wednesday, fueled by public interest around its possible connection to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

Delay, Deny, Defend: Why Insurance Companies Don’t Pay Claims and What You Can Do About It is a 2010 book by legal scholar Jay Feinman that explores insurers’ tactics for rejecting claims. The phrase “delay, deny, defend” has reportedly long been associated with insurers’ tactics for dismissing claims.

Its newfound popularity follows revelations by law enforcement that shell casings found near the crime scene of Thompson’s murder were cryptically inscribed with the words “delay,” “deny,” and “depose.”

Police have not confirmed any connection between the book and Thompson’s death. However, the discovery prompted public curiosity about the insurance industry’s practices and the possible motivations of suspect Luigi Mangione.

According to CNN, the book’s resurgence has also prompted logistical challenges for its author. A social media account claiming to belong to Feinman, a professor emeritus at Rutgers University, announced that the paperback was out of stock on Amazon.

“Because folks have been asking: Delay, Deny, Defend paperback out of stock on Amazon,” the account posted on X on December 6.

Without acknowledging Thompson’s killing and its likely connection to the book’s popularity, to backlash from some social media users, Feinman added that restocks were forthcoming and offered bulk orders directly through Feinman’s website or purchase on Kindle.
