Elon Musk Admits Infamous Chainsaw Stunt Was a Mistake: ‘It Lacked Empathy’

Elon Musk has publicly walked back one of his most eyebrow-raising political stunts – swinging a golden chainsaw onstage at CPAC – a display that the billionaire now says “lacked empathy.”

The February spectacle saw Musk, decked out in “Dark MAGA” regalia, cavorting on stage with a massive chainsaw handed to him by Argentine President Javier Milei.

“This is the chainsaw for bureaucracy,” Musk declared at the time, hyping his government-slashing Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative.

Responding Tuesday to an X user who accused him of acting a “fool” Musk conceded: “Valid point. Milei gave me the chainsaw backstage and I ran with it, but, in retrospect, it lacked empathy.”

The admission comes as tensions between Musk and Trump, once political allies, flare up once again. After previously apologizing for a barrage of online jabs aimed at the president, Musk reignited hostilities this week by threatening to launch a third party, calling the Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill advancing through Congress a “uniparty” con.

Trump, who last month seemed content to bury the hatchet, fired back and suggested turning Musk’s own DOGE buzzsaw against him and his companies.

“We might have to put DOGE on Elon,” the president mused on Tuesday. “You know what DOGE is? DOGE is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon.”

Trump has also left the option of deporting Musk open, something longtime adviser Steve Bannon has said he’s urging him to do.
