Maurene Comey, the New York prosecutor who secured sex trafficking charges against Jeffrey Epstein, has filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump for her abrupt firing over the summer, The New York Times reported Monday.
Comey, who worked out of the Southern District of New York, claims in the suit that she was let go for no reason by Attorney General Pam Bondi in July.
“The politically motivated termination of Ms. Comey — ostensibly under ‘Article II of the Constitution’ — upends bedrock principles of our democracy and justice system,” the lawsuit reads, according to the Times. “Assistant United States attorneys like Ms. Comey must do their jobs without fearing or favoring any political party or perspective, guided solely by the law, the facts and the pursuit of justice.”
Comey’s lawsuit names the “Office of the President,” Bondi, and others as defendants, according to the Times.
Comey is the daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, who was also fired by Trump back in 2017.
In a scathing farewell note to her colleagues, Comey warned that “fear is the tool of a tyrant,” a perceived jab at Trump and Bondi.
“If a career prosecutor can be fired without reason, fear may seep into the decisions of those who remain,” she wrote in the message obtained by Politico. “Do not let that happen.”
“We have entered a new phase where ‘without fear’ may be the challenge,” she continued, referencing the office’s longtime motto of impartiality, adding: “Let this moment fuel the fire that already burns at the heart of this place… Of commitment to seek justice for victims. Of dedication to truth above all else.”
Comey served in the Southern District for about a decade, and worked on the sex trafficking cases against Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, as well as Sean “Diddy” Combs.
