GOP Senator Tells CNN Congress Should Probe Trump’s Latest Wall Street Offer: ‘Conflicts of Interest’
CNN chief congressional correspondent Manu Raju asked several high-profile Republicans in recent days about President Donald Trump’s social media platform selling quicker access to information on the platform to Wall Street, so that traders can make faster trades on his often market-moving posts.
“Are you concerned about the possible conflict of interest here?” Raju asked House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) in a compilation of clips he posted to social media on Monday.
“I don’t— it’s the first I’ve heard of that. I don’t even know what Truth Social is offering. It’s like a—” Johnson replied as Raju clarified, “Wall Street firms, yeah—essentially for the president’s market-moving posts.”
“I don’t have any legal opinion on that. I don’t know anything about it,” Johnson added.
“Can’t comment on that. I don’t know anything about it,” Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) told Raju in a later clip.
“But Trump has made $2 billion since becoming president again,” Raju then says to Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC).
“Again, he’s already a billionaire, and I don’t know how his stuff has been invested,” Mace replied.
“But it’s not raising any red flags with you? That’s my question,” Raju followed up.
“If you come in with a billion and you double it in a couple of years, that’s probably a high-yield savings account. I don’t really know,” Mace added.
“But Senator John Cornyn—now a lame duck after losing to a Trump-backed primary challenger this year—was a rare Republican raising concerns,” Raju then said in his report, playing a clip from Cornyn:
I think President Trump is unique in that he is, obviously, a very successful businessperson outside of his presidency and his political life. And, you know, I think it does raise some questions about conflicts of interest, but I know there’s a process at the White House, and certainly oversight by Congress, to try to make sure that those don’t interfere with his official responsibilities.
“Are you confident that there is actually a process that the president is following here? I’m confident there’s a process. But what about Congress? Should you guys look into this?” Raju pressed in the clip.
“Yes. I suspect that we will do that,” Cornyn added.
“A poll found that 62% of Americans think Trump has used the presidency to enrich himself. But Trump says he’s making more money because the stock market is going up,” Raju concluded in the report.
