President Donald Trump asserted that Elon Musk “just went CRAZY!” and threatened the Tesla CEO’s “billions” in federal contracts on Truth Social after the cold war between the commander-in-chief and ex-DOGE showrunner turned hot on Thursday afternoon.
“Elon was ‘wearing thin,’ I asked him to leave, I took away his EV Mandate that forced everyone to buy Electric Cars that nobody else wanted (that he knew for months I was going to do!), and he just went CRAZY!” wrote Trump in a post on Truth Social.
“The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts. I was always surprised that Biden didn’t do it!” he added in a follow-up.
Trump also kicked off the day of fighting by submitting during an Oval Office Q&A that Musk only opposed his “Big, Beautiful Bill” because it ended the federal electric vehicle mandate, as well as deprived the Tesla CEO’s company of subsidies.
In the hours since, Musk has gone on a social media rampage attacking his old boss, objecting to the president’s characterization of his motives, declaring that he would have lost the 2024 election without Musk’s help, and throwing his words back in his face.
“Is it time to create a new political party in America that actually represents the 80% in the middle?” asked Musk in one post that included a poll.
Musk and Trump’s once seemingly strong political union has gone haywire over Musk’s criticism of Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill,” the would-be signature legislation of Trump’s second term that Musk has characterized as a “disgusting abomination.”
