House Republican Questions If Pentagon Official Went Rogue On Ukraine: Trump ‘Said He Was Not Notified’

Republican Congressman Don Bacon (R-NE) suggested on Friday that top Pentagon official Elbridge Colby may have gone rogue in stopping U.S. weapons shipments to Ukraine.
Bacon, a former U.S. Air Force brigadier general, wrote on X Friday, “Congress wants answers here. Did Under Secretary Colby do this on his own without approval? The President said he was not notified nor did he approve the halt in weapon shipments to Ukraine.”
Bacon, who is not seeking reelection, made the comment while sharing an article from foreign policy analyst Shankar Narayan, who wrote a Substack entry on Friday titled, “The Call, the Cover-Up, and the Colby Disaster.”
In the article, Narayan wrote, “Elbridge Colby — yes, that Colby guy — the Under Secretary of Defense, quietly diverted multiple weapons shipments en route to Ukraine. It was a tactical move designed to block the national security wing of the GOP from nudging Trump closer to a balanced position between Russia and Ukraine. The pro-Putin lobby always has a trick up its sleeve around the time of Trump-Putin calls. This one was their biggest play yet.”
Bacon’s post came just hours after Russia launched one of its largest drone and missile attacks yet on Ukrainian cities.
Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX), the chairman emeritus of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, also weighed in on Friday and cast doubt on the Pentagon’s official reasoning for halting the weapons – the claim that the U.S. was running low on stockpiles.
“Senior U.S. military officials have concluded that providing these critical weapons to Ukraine will not endanger U.S. readiness, so I urge the administration to quickly get the pipeline back up and running. Pentagon officials halting weapons only weakens President Trump’s noble attempts at peace,” McCaul wrote on X while sharing an NBC News article titled, “Hegseth halted weapons for Ukraine despite military analysis that the aid wouldn’t jeopardize U.S. readiness.”
McCaul later sounded off on Putin’s latest attack, writing, “Russia’s attack last night on Ukraine makes it clear Putin is nothing more than a war criminal and a thug. And conducting such a massive strike directly after his call with President Trump is disrespectful to the president’s sincere attempts to bring peace.”
In comments to Politico on Thursday, McCaul also pointed the finger at Colby — a Trump appointee. “I think it’s all made by the DOD policy director, this Colby guy. We essentially don’t have a national security adviser,” said McCaul. “I’m not even sure [Secretary of State Marco] Rubio was consulted on this one … There’s internal division in the White House.”
