A second detainee from a Dallas ICE facility has died after a gunman targeted the Texas facility last week.
The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) announced in a Tuesday statement that Miguel Ángel García-Hernández, 32, died after being removed from life support. He was one of three detainees shot by a now-deceased gunman who officials say held anti-ICE beliefs that had grown more aggressive leading up to the attack.
Stephany Gauffeny, the wife of García-Hernández, said in a statement that her husband was a “good man” and “loving father.”
“We had just bought our first home together, and he worked hard every single day to make sure our children had what they needed. His death is a senseless tragedy that has left our family shattered. I do not know how to explain to our children that their father is gone,” she said.
The couple was expecting their fifth child.
García-Hernández was previously identified as one of three shot by suspected shooter Joshua Jahn, a 29-year-old who took his own life and was found near the scene of the crime with a rifle and rounds reading: “anti-ICE.”
Norlan Guzmán-Fuente, 37, was also shot and killed in the attack. No officers were harmed in the shooting. The gunman reportedly targeted a transport van at the Dallas facility from a nearby roof. The shooter let off rounds “indiscriminately,” officials said.
“Our prayers are with the families of those killed and our ICE law enforcement. This vile attack was motivated by hatred for ICE,” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in a statement after the shooting. “For months, we’ve been warning politicians and the media to tone down their rhetoric about ICE law enforcement before someone was killed. This shooting must serve as a wake-up call.”
The Dallas facility was reopened on Tuesday after being briefly shut down following the attack. The same facility faced a bomb threat in August, leading to man’s arrest. DHS officials have also noted in their remarks following the Dallas shooting that assaults on ICE agents is up more than 1000% this year.
