Trump Rages at Canada, Announces ‘Terminating ALL Discussions on Trade’

President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social on Friday that he was “terminating” all trade talks with Canada and that he will unilaterally decide the tariff on America’s northern neighbor within seven days.
“We have just been informed that Canada, a very difficult Country to TRADE with, including the fact that they have charged our Farmers as much as 400% Tariffs, for years, on Dairy Products, has just announced that they are putting a Digital Services Tax on our American Technology Companies, which is a direct and blatant attack on our Country,” wrote Trump, adding:
They are obviously copying the European Union, which has done the same thing, and is currently under discussion with us, also. Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately. We will let Canada know the Tariff that they will be paying to do business with the United States of America within the next seven day period. Thank you for your attention to this matter!
Trump’s on-again, off-again tariffs have roiled markets in recent months, causing stock market dips and surges as he adds and then rescinds tariffs on major trade partners. Canada is the U.S.’s second-largest trading partner and currently has a 25% tariff placed on all non-USMCA goods. Trump excluded Canadian energy imports from the 25% tariff as well, instead slapping a 10% levy on energy imports from the country. Canada is also paying Trump’s global 50% tariff on steel and aluminum, as it is the U.S.’s largest importer of those vital materials.
Trump has set a July 9th deadline for all trade agreements to be finalized, or larger tariffs will kick in globally. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggested on Friday, however, that the deadline may not be a firm one. “If we can ink 10 or 12 of the important 18 … then I think we could have trade wrapped up by Labor Day,” Bessent told Fox Business Network.
