Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has taken a slapshot at President Donald Trump after America’s northern neighbor emerged victorious in the 4 Nations Face-Off.
“You can’t take our country — and you can’t take our game,” the PM posted on X after his country’s thrilling overtime win, an apparent dig at Trump, who had taunted Trudeau as “Gov. Trudeau” after weeks of pledging to annex Canada as America’s 51st state.

Ahead of the contest, Trump called the American team, who were left feeling “jubilant” after his remarks, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said during her Thursday briefing, adding that “we look forward to the United States beating our soon-to-be-51st state.”
The bad blood between the nations was a constant storyline of the 4 Nations Face-Off, with Canadian fans booing the US as its national anthem played during their first meeting in Montreal. The Americans won that contest 3-1 in a brutal slugfest that saw three fights in the opening seconds of the game.
“A lot of stuff going on with Canada and the USA right now, and us playing against each other was kind of a perfect storm for our sport,” tournament MVP and Colorado Avalanche star Nathan MacKinnon told the AP. “It was much more popular than even we would have imagined.”
Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid netted the OT winner to break a 2-2 tie before a packed crowd at Boston’s TD Garden and take home the victory in the hockey tournament, which also included Sweden and Finland.
“I know it’s just a quick tournament, and it’s not an Olympic gold medal or anything like that, but it means the world to our group, as you can see,” McDavid told reporters. “It was special.”
