Shark Tank star Kevin O’Leary blamed President Donald Trump’s “constant barbing” for the Canadian Liberal Party’s dramatic, come-from-behind victory in Monday’s election.
While the Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre, had led in the polls through the early months of this year, the Liberals surged in the polls amidst Trump’s imposition of tariffs on and persistent insulting of the United States’ northern neighbor, which he has suggested should become the U.S.’s “51st state.”
O’Leary concurred with this explanation of Poilievre’s disappointing loss during an appearance on The Daniela Cambone Show.
“It was historic, no question about it,” said O’Leary. “A unique set of circumstances, you know, imputed by Trump’s constant barbing at Canada as the 51st state gave a unique opportunity for [Mark] Carney. And I think he did a masterful job in getting people in every province to say, ‘Look, let’s forget about the liberals’ track record and let’s focus on the enemy within North America,’ and that was Trump.”
O’Leary, who often presents a positive view of Trump and his policies, has also criticized the president over his “chaotic” implementation of his trade policy.
“It’s a little chaotic from the point of view that you don’t get a consistent message out of the administration. I admit that’s a problem. You know, [Howard] Lutnick says one thing and then [Doug] Burgum says another. That’s got to get cleaned up, and that’s self-inflicted, they can fix that,” O’Leary told Fox Business’s Stuart Varney earlier this month.
