The wife of deported migrant Kilmar Abrego García has revealed she was moved into a safe house after government officials posted her address on social media.

Jennifer Vasquez Sura spoke with The Washington Post’s María Luisa Paúl after her husband’s ongoing case and the depiction by the Trump administration. Sura said her address was shared publicly when the Department of Homeland Security posted an order of protection she sought — and ultimately abandoned — against her husband.

The order did not have her address redacted.

Fearing for her own safety and the safety of her three children, she has moved to a safehouse as government officials openly mock her husband and paint him as a criminal.

“I don’t feel safe when the government posts my address, the house where my family lives, for everyone to see, especially when this case has gone viral and people have all sorts of opinions,” Sura said. “So, this is definitely a bit terrifying. I’m scared for my kids.”

García was deported to a megaprison meant for gang members in El Salvador a move the administration initially admitted was done in error. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt contended last week that García’s imprisonment was no mistake.

Government officials have insisted that García is an MS-13 gang member, despite his denial and no prior gang-related convictions. García was in the country illegally, living with his wife and three kids in Maryland for over a decade.

Sura said the order of protection came out of a 2021 incident in which her husband struck her. This followed a 2019 arrest by immigration officers. She said it was an isolated incident.

“Look, Kilmar is not perfect — nobody is,” she said. “Day by day, you grow. Every day, you learn. And he was trying his best for me, for our kids, for our future.”
