Memphis Mayor Responds to Trump’s Claims He Was ‘Happy’ About National Guard Deployment: ‘An Overstatement’

ABC News
Memphis Mayor Paul Young said that President Donald Trump’s comments that he was “happy” about the decision to deploy the National Guard to his city were “an overstatement” while appearing in front of reporters on Friday.
Trump appeared on Fox & Friends on Friday morning, where he announced he would be sending federal forces, including the National Guard and “anybody else we need,” to the “deeply troubled” city of Memphis, Tennessee.
“The mayor is happy,” Trump continued. “He’s a Democrat mayor, the mayor is happy.”
At a Friday presser, Young was asked by a reporter to respond to the president’s comments. “Yeah, that was an overstatement,” he said, to scattered laughter across the room.
“I am focused on the resources: FBI, DEA, ATF,” he continued. “Those are the things that I believe will truly help us be able to support law enforcement and reduce violent crime. I do not support the National Guard; however, they are coming. It’s not the mayor’s call.”
Young also expressed a desire for more details on the deployment, citing the city’s drop in crime over the last year: “When will they come? How many people are gonna come? How long will they be here? What are they going to wear?”
