Rep. Wesley Hunt Bristles When Paul Begala Accuses Trump Of ‘Pissing On Our Veterans’: ‘No He Doesn’t!’
Rep. Wesley Hunt objected when Democratic strategist Paul Begala accused President Donald Trump of “pissing on our veterans” during a discussion with comic and pundit Bill Maher.
On Friday night’s edition of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, the interview guest was Dave Barry, Pulitzer Prize-winning humor columnist and author of the new book “Class Clown: The Memoirs of a Professional Wiseass: How I Went 77 Years Without Growing Up.”
The panel guests were Paul Begala, Democratic strategist and political contributor at CNN; and Rep. Wesley Hunt, Republican congressman who represents the 38th district of Texas.
Hunt — a staunch supporter of the president — took exception when Begala tore into Trump over the military, and cited recruitment figures as a rejoinder:
PAUL BEGALA: I want to come back to this notion about Trump in the military and about President Biden, whose son served and enlisted, something Donald Trump’s son never did.
Donald Trump, Donald Trump went to a military school for high school. Okay, but he didn’t serve, he avoided service in Vietnam. He said he had bone spurs.
Then he said avoiding STDs was his Vietnam. Then he says John McCain was not a war hero.
Right, then he said troops are suckers and losers and our war dead.
REP. WESLEY HUNT (R-TX): I- I’m afraid–.
PAUL BEGALA: Yes he did! He was going to World War one cemetery! My grandfather fought in World War One and was wounded in Europe for this country.
REP. WESLEY HUNT (R-TX): That’s been proven false.
PAUL BEGALA: I honor your service and honor his, and Trump pisses on our veterans and our military every day!
REP. WESLEY HUNT (R-TX): No, he does not. No, no, he doesn’t.
PAUL BEGALA: Yes he does!
REP. WESLEY HUNT (R-TX): I’m asking you, I’m gonna ask you a question. If that is the case, if that is a case, December, January, and February, we’ve seen the highest recruiting numbers for the military than we’ve see in years. Why is that the case?
You can say that all you want, but I am somebody that has served, and the people that are in my ranks overwhelmingly look at President Trump and they say, if I really want somebody that’s going to defend us and put us in harm’s way, if necessary, I would absolutely take President Trump over Joe Biden.
PAUL BEGALA: So why does he stab them in the back?
Well, then if that’s the case, then why do we have record recruiting right now?
BILL MAHER: Alright, please. This show is not about arguing.
