Sniper in Ambush Killing of 2 Idaho Firefighters Identified as Wess Roley
The gunman who opened lured Idaho firefighters to the scene of a blaze before opening fire on them — killing two — has reportedly been identified.
The shooter has been revealed as Wess Roley, 20, according to multiple reports.
Authorities say the suspect set a fire in Coeur d’Alène before laying in wait for first responders. When they arrived, he sprayed them with bullets. Two firefighters were killed in the carnage, and a third was injured.
Roley’s body was found hours later, but authorities have not revealed whether he took his own life or was killed by officers.
Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris had previously encouraged anyone with a clear shot to “take the shot and neutralize the threat.”
Idaho Gov. Brad Little (R) offered condolences to the lives lost in an X post Monday, and said he ordered state flags to fly at half-staff.
“The entire state of Idaho grieves the profound loss of the firefighters killed in the shocking ambush in North Idaho,” he said.
“We do believe that the suspect started the fire, and we do believe that it was an ambush and it was intentional,” Sheriff Norris said at a Sunday night news conference. “These firefighters did not have a chance.”
