Top European golfer Rory McIlroy flipped out at U.S. Ryder Cup fans on Saturday, causing state troopers to form a barrier between the European players and the crowd.
The Ryder Cup is a three-day contest between 12 top U.S. golfers and 12 top European golfers being held this year at the Bethpage Black course in Farmingdale, New York.
NUCLR GOLF reported on X, “A full line of state troopers have been deployed to the rope line of the Lowry – McIlroy group as fan behaviour reportedly crosses a tipping point.”
Golf fans who are usually known for their sense of decorum and stillness, threw all that to the wind by yelling comments at McIlroy while he prepared to chip onto the green. McIlroy finally turned and exclaimed, “Guys! Shut the f**k up!” which drew heavy boos from the crowd.
Oliver Holt, chief sports writer with The Daily Mail posted, “Out on course with McIlroy’s group. The abuse of him has crossed a line this morning. Vicious, personal, thuggish edge to it.”
A sportscaster with Sky Sports explained the situation as:
The crowd is the other big talking point at the moment…and it is getting pretty nasty. It was quite nasty last night in that final match with Shane Lowry and Rory McIlvoy. Some fairly pointed comments, some expletive-laden abuse hurled at both of them, as well. And it was boiling over this morning, as well.
It’s on this side of the road, holes holes one, and then 15 to 18 are all this side of the road for those that don’t know the geography of Bethpage Black. The holes the other side of the road, there isn’t too much, it’s all fairly good natured. And to be honest, in places, the “Olé, Olé, Olés” are outnumbering the USA’s “U-S-As.”
But it can get pretty febrile over here, and at one point this morning you heard Rory McIlroy tell someone to “shut up” with a couple of other words thrown in the middle as well, before promptly stuffing it to two feet. So that just goes to show you, don’t wind up Rory McIlroy because he can probably make you regret those words.
On Friday, President Donald Trump attended the tournament with his granddaughter Kai Trump, who is a nationally-ranked golfer.
