Texas Democrat Carjacked One Mile From the U.S. Capitol In Second Assault On a Member of Congress This Year
Texas Democrat Rep. Henry Cuellar was carjacked on Monday night by three armed attackers about one mile from the U.S. Capitol.
“As Congressman Cuellar was parking his car this evening, 3 armed assailants approached the Congressman and stole his vehicle. Luckily, he was not harmed and is working with local law enforcement,” said Cuellar’s chief of staff Jacob Hochberg in a statement.
Hochberg noted that the police recovered Cuellar’s vehicle not long after, but that the congressman’s phone and iPad were stolen.
Fox News’s Alexandria Hoff reported on the incident on Tuesday morning and noted that the police do not believe that Cuellar was targeted, but that the juveniles who committed the crime recognized the car “as a good one to steal and then sell off.”
The Associated Press noted the carjacking is the second crime-related attack on a member of Congress in recent months. “Monday’s carjacking was the second assault on a member of Congress in the District of Columbia this year. In February, Democratic Rep. Angie Craig of Minnesota was assaulted in her apartment building, suffering bruises while escaping serious injury. Her chief of staff said the attack did not appear to be politically motivated.”
