‘There Was Blood In The Water!’ CNN’s Kaitlan Collins Goes Inside ‘Mayhem’ At Bombshell Trump Presser
CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins took Late Night host Seth Meyers inside the “mayhem” that was President Donald Trump’s bombshell Gaza presser.
Collins is the host of CNN’s The Source with Kaitlan Collins, but has also returned to the White House beat as the network’s Chief White House Correspondent. Collins has quickly returned to form as a tough questioner whom Trump is quick to attack when he’s challenged.
She was in the room for Trump’s joint press conference with Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during which Trump stunned the world with his plan to remove all 2 million Palestinians from Gaza and take “ownership” of it.
On Thursday night’s edition of NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers, Collins explained how reporters smelled “blood in the water” when they realized Trump wasn’t sticking to the usual “2 and 2” format for foreign leader pressers:
SETH MEYERS: Was the press committee you ran to, the joint press conference with Netanyahu?
KAITLAN COLLINS: That was a separate one. That happened on Tuesday. I don’t know. I can’t remember.
SETH MEYERS: We used a clip of you. You asked him a question. And it is — there’s a different vibe to a Trump press conference.
KAITLAN COLLINS: It’s such a different vibe. And can — I haven’t been to a White House press conference in a while. I was here for two years, and I’ve just returned back to being the chief White House correspondent.
And typically, when a world leader is there, it’s called a “two and two” and it’s two reporters on the American side get a question and two reporters on whatever foreign press is visiting. This time the Israeli side.
But then after Trump and Netanyahu gave their statements, I noticed Trump wasn’t looking at like a list of reporters to choose from. He was kind of just picking from the audience, and it was like blood in the water! Like everyone realized that he could call on anyone. And there were 75 reporters in that room. And it was —
SETH MEYERS: Which is a lot.
KAITLAN COLLINS: Right? It was the crowds, like everyone was squeezed against the walls. There was nowhere for anyone to stand. It was like total mayhem!
And but you could see everyone realize this is a freewheeling kind of press conference. It’s not just going to be two questions and then they’re out.
And so everyone was standing up trying to get a question. And it just, you know, kind of devolved into chaos.
