Town Hall Erupts Over Provision Letting Trump ‘Void Elections’ — Which Doesn’t Exist
Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-IA) was caught off guard by a question on a provision in President Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” allowing him to “void elections” — which doesn’t exist.
The GOP-controlled House narrowly passed the Trump-backed spending bill nicknamed the “Big Beautiful Bill” last week, but it faces a rough road in the Senate. It also seems to be facing a rough time on the road.
Rep. Hinson — who won reelection by a 15-point margin in her district — held a town hall meeting in Elkader Wednesday night that devolved into jeers and heckling when she brought up the bill and said she was “proud” to have voted for it.
But things also got wild when a constituent brought up the viral claim that the bill allows Trump to “void elections,” and Hinson responded not by refuting the claim, but with some patter about “election integrity”:
DAVE FROM AUSTIN: Hi, I’m Dave from Austin. I was going to ask about how many 10-year-olds, 12-year old criminals have been deported by ICE.
But my question is you slipped in two clauses in the big beautiful bill. One is to allow Trump to void elections that he feels he can, and the other one was to avoid contempt of court judgements. Why were those put in there?
REP. ASHLEY HINSON: That kind of follows up on what Brandi said. Our whole point is to make sure we don’t have activist judges who are holding back the (INAUDIBLE).
CROWDMEMBERS: (JEERS).
REP. ASHLEY HINSON: –that agenda.
I think, Dave, the other thing to that point is I want to just comment briefly on election integrity, because I do believe that’s important.
And one of the things that we have learned a lot in Iowa is that elections can be very close.
So to the point I made earlier about making sure that illegal immigrants are not voting in our elections, that’s been a priority of President Trump’s and of mine to make sure that we can protect the integrity of each and every single one of your votes.
(CLAPPING).
Numerous outlets have fact-checked viral claims about the bill, which does include some controversial provisions, but not one that allows Trump to void elections.
