President Donald Trump announced an upcoming “100% tariff” on all foreign-made films that he branded a “national security threat” responsible for damaging “the movie industry in America.”
Trump said he was directing the Department of Commerce to impose the tariff, citing what he called the “very fast death” of America’s movie industry. Framing the move as more than just an economic policy, he blamed a “concerted effort” by foreign nations using incentives to lure filmmakers and studios overseas that meant the films contained “messaging and propaganda!”
The president wrote:
The Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death. Other Countries are offering all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States. Hollywood, and many other areas within the U.S.A., are being devastated. This is a concerted effort by other Nations and, therefore, a National Security threat. It is, in addition to everything else, messaging and propaganda! Therefore, I am authorizing the Department of Commerce, and the United States Trade Representative, to immediately begin the process of instituting a 100% Tariff on any and all Movies coming into our Country that are produced in Foreign Lands. WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA, AGAIN!
The post comes to finish a weekend where Trump also called for reopening Alcatraz and publicly feuded with Fox News personalities who appeared to question his recent economic and political decisions.
As for the film industry, Trump’s move could upend international distribution pipelines and further inflame tensions both within the globalized industry and with other countries.
