Trump Gives Frosty Response When Asked About Fate of Embattled Speaker Johnson, Just Days After Backing Him

Just days after giving him a full-throated vote of confidence, former President Donald Trump seemed to pull back a little when asked about the fate of House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).

While speaking with reporters after spending his day in court Tuesday, Trump was asked about the motion to vacate Speaker Johnson — which picked up big momentum Tuesday after Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) announced he is now on board with ousting the speaker.

“Well, we’ll see what happens with that,” Trump said.

Just four days earlier, during a press conference with Johnson at Mar-a-Lago, Trump was much more vocal in his support of the speaker.

“I think he’s doing a very good job,” Trump said. “He’s doing about as good as you’re going to do. And I’m sure that Marjorie [Taylor Greene] understands that. She’s a very good friend of mine, and I know she has a lot of respect for the speaker.”

Trump added, “I stand with the speaker.”

As of this coming Friday, when Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) resigns, Johnson can only afford to lose one single Republican vote to survive a challenge to his speakership — meaning that if Massie and Greene move to oust Johnson, the speaker will need Democratic votes to retain his post.
