President Donald Trump announced the death of Charlie Kirk in a post on his Truth Social account Wednesday, describing him as “Great, and even Legendary” and offering sympathies to his family.
The 31-year-old Turning Point USA founder was speaking at an event at Utah Valley University Wednesday when the shooting occurred. Video taken by students attending his speech show Kirk appearing to have been shot in the neck after the sound of a single gunshot was heard.
Kirk was a prominent supporter of the president, encouraging the young voters in his organization to vote for Trump during his presidential campaigns and speaking at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee last year.
News of the shooting shocked politicians and commentators on both sides of the aisle, who offered prayers for his family and condemnations of political violence.
Kirk was taken to a local hospital but died from his injuries. Deseret News political reporter Brigham Tomco reported that Utah Speaker Mike Schultz had confirmed Kirk’s death, and Andrew Kolvet, Kirk’s spokesman, confirmed the news as well.
The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!
