‘TWO DOWN’: Republicans Celebrate News That Harvard’s Claudine Gay Has Joined UPenn’s President In Resigning

Conservatives celebrated the news that Harvard’s embattled President Claudine Gay announced her resignation Tuesday.

Gay ostensibly resigned due to mounting plagiarism allegations that came to light after a disastrous congressional hearing in December on campus anti-Semitism. University of Pennsylvania President Liz Magill left her post shortly after the hearing as she faced mounting criticism for failing to answer a question about anti-Semitic speech on campus. The third witness at the hearing, MIT’s President Sally Kornbluth, has remained in office.

Gay posted a lengthy resignation letter “to Members of the Harvard Community.”

She wrote, “It has become clear that it is in the best interests of Harvard for me to resign so that our community can navigate this moment of extraordinary challenge with a focus on the institution rather than any individual.”

The Harvard Crimson was the first to report about Gay’s resignation, writing, “Gay’s resignation — just six months and two days into the presidency — comes amid growing allegations of plagiarism and lasting doubts over her ability to respond to antisemitism on campus after her disastrous congressional testimony Dec. 5.”

The University governing board, called “The Corporation,” initially supported Gay. The Crimson reported, “The announcement comes three weeks after the Corporation announced unanimous support for Gay after ‘extensive deliberations’ following the congressional hearing.
