WATCH: Fights Break Out Between Pro-Israel and Pro-Palestine Protesters As Star Spangled Banner Plays At UCLA

“This has evolved into utter chaos,” said Spectrum News reporter Taylor Schaub from the UCLA campus on Sunday, when a scheduled Pro-Israel demonstration broke out into multiple altercations after pro-Palestinian protesters breached the barrier put up by police between the two groups and confrontations ensued.

“This morning, a group of demonstrators breached a barrier that the university had established separating two groups of protestors on our campus, resulting in physical altercations,” said UCLA spox Mary Osako in a statement. “UCLA has a long history of being a place of peaceful protest, and we are heartbroken about the violence that broke out.”

Various livestreams and social media accounts captured some of the incidents, including at one point altercations breaking out between two groups, both armed with signs and flags, while the Star Spangled Banner can be heard playing in the background.

More video has been shared from the scene on social media as events continued to unfold into the afternoon, past the time the pro-Israel rally was scheduled to end.

Police in riot gear have arrived on the scene but the protests continue at the time of this posting.

Reporting from the scene this afternoon, Spectrum News’s Schaub described how things started. “These are pro-Palestinian protesters walk to kind of push their way into the pro-Israeli, area here, pushing, shoving, fighting their way in. And now they’ve occupied the other half of the grass lawn that you see behind me,” he said. “And both sides are kind of just going back and forth right now. There’s a lot of shouting, there’s a lot of name calling. There’s been some fighting.”
