Two planes were grounded at a Vietnamese airport after one of them collided with the other on the taxiway and nearly severed its tail.

The incident occurred shortly before 2:30 p.m. local time at Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport on Friday. In a video posted online, one of the planes — a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner from Vietnam Airlines — could be seen taxiing toward the runway. As it did so, it passed by a stationary Vietnam Airlines Airbus A321. The Airbus, according to a report from Travel and Tour World, was parked and waiting to taxi before taking off for Ho Chi Minh City.

The Boeing, however, turned out to be too close to the Airbus. As the Boeing passed by, the tip of its right wing struck the tail of the Airbus — slicing through the tail with ease and appearing to almost sever it completely.

The planes were carrying a combined 386 passengers, and arrangements were made to rebook them.

The report continued:

The Northern Airports Authority and the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) are actively investigating the cause of the collision. The incident occurred at the intersection of taxiways S3 and S, where both planes were maneuvering on the tarmac. The weather conditions at the time were clear, with good visibility, raising questions about the exact circumstances that led to the collision.

Both planes suffered damage, as the Airbus A321’s “vertical stabilizer was torn” and the Boeing 787-9’s “right wingtip” was more or less destroyed. The airport initiated immediate safety protocols and cleared the runway of debris.
