A fire broke out on a PATH commuter train in New Jersey on Monday — with shocking video showing the cars filling with smoke, as trapped passengers frantically tried to escape.
The fire began around 6 a.m. at the Newport PATH station in Jersey City. Port Authority officials said the flames ignited under one of the eastbound train cars.
Thirteen people were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene, with nine taken to local hospitals for further observation.
Video of the scary incident shows passengers begging to be let out of the smoke-filled cars, as the fire raged on the platform.
One passenger reported hearing a loud explosion, while another wrote on X that “[t]he cart before me was literally in flames.”
The fire caused suspensions between Hoboken and World Trade Center and 33rd Street, and between Journal Square and 33rd Street stations until 11 a.m. on Monday, said Port Authority officials.
