Volcano Erupts in Iceland After Earthquakes

Icelandic Meteorological Office
A long-dormant volcano erupted in Iceland on Friday near Reykjavik.
The eruption near the capital came after, according to Reuters, “thousands of small earthquakes” in the past few weeks.
Volcanic #eruption began tonight near Fagradalsfjall on #Reykjanes peninsula, close to Reykjavík and Keflavík airport. Lives and homes are not in danger and disruption of flights unlikely. Still, we need to be careful and vigilant.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office shared both an image of the lava flow and a short video.
“The first image of the eruption. Taken from the Coast Guard helicopter. The southern end of the lava flow is about 2.6 km from Suðurstrandarvegur. According to initial information, the fissure is about 200 m long,” they tweeted.
