‘We’re Back, Italians!’ Trump Kicks Off Cabinet Meeting by Commemorating Columbus Day

President Donald Trump signed a proclamation Thursday officially proclaiming the second Monday in October as “Columbus Day” in honor of Italian explorer Christopher Columbus.

In recent years, some states have renamed the holiday “Indigenous Peoples Day,” arguing that Columbus committed genocide after he landed in the New World. Trump’s proclamation seems to be the latest strike in his “war on woke.”

White House staff secretary Will Scharf presented Trump with the proclamation for his signature during Thursday’s Cabinet meeting.

“We have your Columbus Day proclamation for Monday which we are signing a bit early,” Scharf said. “Christopher Columbus obviously discovered the New World in 1492. He was a great Italian explorer. He sailed his three ships, the Nina, the Pinta, the Santa Maria, across the Atlantic Ocean and landed in what is today the Caribbean. This is a particularly important holiday for Italian Americans who celebrate the legacy of Christopher Columbus, the innovation and explorer zeal that he represented.”

“In other words, we are calling it Columbus Day,” Trump proclaimed as the Cabinet room burst into applause.

“That was the press that broke out in applause,” Trump claimed. “Can you believe that? I’ve never seen that happen. The press broke out in applause. Good — Columbus Day — we’re back. Columbus Day — we’re back, Italians! We love the Italians!”

Pew Research Center has called the day “one of the most inconsistently celebrated U.S. holidays,” since it was declared a federal holiday in 1971. That’s because only 30 states currently celebrate Columbus Day, with only 20 states and two territories making it a paid holiday for state workers.. Others call it Indigenous Peoples Day or American Indian Heritage Day.
