‘What a Stupid Question!’ Karoline Leavitt Scolds Reporter Asking if Trump Would Allow Peaceful Protest During His Big Military Parade
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt scolded a reporter asking if President Donald Trump would permit peaceful protests during Saturday’s military parade in Washington.
In a testy exchange during Wednesday’s press briefing, NOTUS White House correspondent Jasmine Wright followed up on a comment made Tuesday by the president — in which he said that protestors at the parade being held in honor of the Army’s 250th birthday would be met with “very big force.”
“For those people that want to protest, they’re going to be met with very big force,” Trump said. “And I haven’t even heard about a protest, but you know, this is [sic] people that hate our country, but they will be met with very heavy force.”
On Wednesday, Wright asked Leavitt: “Can you clarify what kind of protest President Trump does support or find acceptable?”
“The president absolutely supports peaceful protests,” Leavitt replied. “He supports the First Amendment. He supports the right of Americans to make their voices heard. He does not support violence of any kind. He does support assaulting law enforcement officers who are simply trying to do their job. It’s very clear for the president what he supports and what he does not.”
Wright followed up by asking: “So if there were peaceful protests on Saturday for the military parade, President Trump would allow that?”
Leavitt did not appreciate the query.
“Of course, the president supports peaceful protests!” Leavitt told Wright. “What a stupid question!”
