‘Who Would Want It?’ CNN Anchor Asks Why Anyone Would Want to Be Attorney General After Trump Sacks Another One

CNN host Pamela Brown asked Thursday why anyone would want to serve as Donald Trump’s next Attorney General after Pam Bondi became the latest in a line of Trump AGs to be cut loose.

Trump confirmed Thursday that “loyal friend” Bondi was on her way out in favor of her deputy Todd Blanche, who’s stepping in as Acting Attorney General.

During Trump’s first administration, Attorney General Jeff Sessions resigned after Trump questioned his loyalty over the investigation into Russian election interference. William Barr resigned over Trump’s insistence over widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election. Two interim AGs — Matt Whitaker and Jeffrey Rosen — temporarily filed the vacancies.

“I know attorney general, obviously, is a prestigious position, but I mean, who would want it?” Brown asked her panel when she sat in for host Kasie Hunt on The Arena. “I mean, we saw the Truth Social post when Trump called out Pam Bondi about not going hard enough after his perceived political enemies.”

“Listen, it’s a very powerful position. There’s a lot you can do,” said Trump 2024 campaign manager Brian Lanza. “I think most people decide, you know, let me see what I can do and try to manage the president at the same time. And that, just the managing the president at the same time and the expectations is just — they’re untenable most of the time.”

Conservative journalist Jonah Goldberg added, “It’s a rough job to ask somebody who wants to have a good reputation in the law, which a lot of lawyers tend to want. It’s even harder if you expect, which is reasonable, the minimum the Democrats are going to take back the House And being Trump’s a frustrated, increasingly lame duck president, being his attorney general, when you’re going to have Democrats with subpoena power? A lot of the candidates have nice jobs now. And I don’t see it being too attractive to a lot of people.”

Former Federal Prosecutor Elliot Williams added, “all virtually, of the 10 people who have served as the attorney general, many of them were loyalists to the president, but still met a very unfortunate fate because it’s a very, very hard job to do to serve this president. And you know, whoever it is, no matter where their politics are, even if they’re loyal to the president, they’re going to meet the same fate she did.”
