‘You Lobbed These Grenades at Me!’ Netanyahu Snipes at CBS’ Brennan After She Confronts PM About ‘Growing Distrust’ of Him in US Gov’t
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was confronted about “growing distrust” of him in the U.S. government in a tense Sunday show interview.
In a tense interview, CBS’ Margaret Brennan told Netanyahu about the U.S. questioning Israel’s tactics and his leadership — amid increasing public and private pressure to negotiate a new hostage deal with Hamas.
“There is growing distrust of you personally, sir,” Brennan said. “You know this — in the US Congress and within the Biden White House. When your closest ally is telling you things like this and telling you that you need to reconsider a strategy, isn’t it worth considering?”
Netanyahu stood firm.
“Look, I think that the U.S. has agrees with us on the goal of destroying Hamas,” Netanyahu said. “And on the goal of releasing the hostages. The decisions of how to do that are left with us and with me and the elected cabinet of Israel.”
Brennan went on to voice a specific criticism of a former leading U.S. official.
“The former head of Central Command was on this program just a few weeks ago and said, basically, you have not articulated any specific endgame here,” Brennan said. “But putting that aside, I want to come back to a few different things.”
The prime minister, though, stopped her.
“Margaret, Margaret, hold on!” Netanyahu said. “You lobbed these grenades at me, and you keep on moving! First of all, you say, there’s no, confidence. Me? Well, the Isreali public confidence in me.”
Brennan replied by citing protests against the Israel government which took place yesterday in Tel Aviv.
“Of course we have protests!” Netanyahu said. “We have protests as well as democracy. We’ve had protests for 30 years. But the Israeli people are united, has never before.”
