James Carville Blasts Dems for Becoming an ‘Urbanist’ Party — Demands They ‘Apologize to the Rural for Being So Godd*mn Stupid’

Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville blasted his party on Thursday for becoming too focused on courting urban voters and called for a strategy to win back those in rural areas.

On the Politics War Room podcast with cohost Al Hunt, Carville said Democrats should “apologize” to disenfranchised rural voters for “being so goddamn stupid” by ignoring them.

Hunt read a question from a listener, who asked if “Trump tariffs and Doge cuts will hurt people in rural areas.” ”

“These voters are overwhelmingly Republicans,” Hunt added while reading the question. “Is now the time for Democrats to campaign hard in rural areas?

“Well, I think it was always the time for Democrats to campaign hard in rural areas,” Carville said. “I don’t know how the party ever got away from that.”

Carville added that “urbanist” voters and “commentators” representing the party “lived in a folly of a world that we could exist in elections by just concentrating on large urban areas that are not even that strategically located.”

The architect of Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential victory added that in 2024, Democrats missed an opportunity to reach voters who do not live in major population areas – something he said he hoped would change in 2028. He also said his party should apologize:

It’s now, this should give us, if we play this very smartly, it should give us an opportunity to literally reintroduce ourselves to rural America. Because for large swaths of rural Americans that feel like the Democratic Party doesn’t see them, doesn’t talk to them, or doesn’t prioritize them.

And this gives us a chance for them to take another look at the Democratic Party. and I hope that we don’t, you know, the stupidity of, we’ve got to be the most progressive self-righteous moralistic people in the world you know people who live in rural America just you know fat lazy and stupid, which is decidedly not true. But that’s the way that that some of the urbanist elements of our party have tried to come across and it’s stupid and they ought to apologize to the world for being so goddamn stupid.
