Al Sharpton and Charlamagne Clash Over Trump, Whether Harris ‘Suffered’ From ‘Democratic Brand’: ‘I Don’t Accept That’

Charlamagne Tha God and Al Sharpton clashed over whether or not the “brand” of the Democratic Party led to President Donald Trump’s election victory over former Vice President Kamala Harris.

Sharpton joined Charlamagne on The Breakfast Club on Wednesday, where he tore into the current administration and expressed shock at voters choosing Trump over Harris. The longtime activist also knocked those who blamed Democrats for Harris’s loss.

“That’s trying to rationalize that you are not trying to do better. To say that a man with 34 felony convictions, found guilty of sexual harassment, is better than a woman who did everything right, lawyer, attorney general, senator, went to Howard, and to give that example to your kids — I’ll go with the felon because he’s got swagger is to make us appear like we’re not serious,” Sharpton said.

Charlamagne pushed back on this, arguing voters were more interested in opposing Democrats than supporting Trump. Harris, he said, “suffered” from being attached to an unpopular “brand.”

“The last time the Democrats have been cool in the eyes of the people was ’08 and ’12,” Charlamagne said, adding that Democrats had to “fight hard” to convince voters to support former President Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, and Harris.

When Charlamagne cited the Covid-19 pandemic and the death of George Floyd in police custody as reasons behind Biden’s win in 2020, Sharpton rejected this and again tore into President Trump, bringing up his felony convictions and his responses to Covid and Floyd.

Charlamagne and Sharpton did eventually find one point of agreement when it comes to the Democratic Party: they need a new team.

“Even when [Republicans] fumble, I don’t think Democrats have the team to recover the ball,” Charlamagne said.

“Now there you and I agree,” Sharpton replied. “I think the problem is you’ve got the wrong team players. You cannot play a game if you’re not going to play the game. They’re afraid Trump’s going to tweet, Trump’s going to do this, don’t get in the ring if you’re afraid to get hit.”

AL SHARPTON: To tell yourself, to try to rationalize your inactivity does not make you smart. Because a lot of brothers and sisters are saying that to me, ‘well we were doing bad anyway.’ That’s trying to rationalize that you are not trying to do better. To say that a man with 34 felony convictions, found guilty of sexual harassment, is better than a woman who did everything right, lawyer, attorney general, senator, went to Howard, and to give that example to your kids — I’ll go with the felon because he’s got swagger is to make us appear like we’re not serious.

CHARLAMAGNE THA GOD: I don’t think that’s a fair comparison though and the reason I say that is I don’t think the vice president — I mean, of course she didn’t run a perfect campaign, who does? But I think that she suffered from being apart of the Democratic brand as opposed to her. It wasn’t the fact that they chose Donald Trump over her. They chose Donald Trump over the Democrats because I feel like it was the same thing in 2020. You had to fight to convince people to vote for Joe Biden. It was definitely the same thing in 2016. You had to fight to convince people to vote for Hillary Clinton. The last time the Democrats have been cool in the eyes of the people was ’08 and ’12.

SHARPTON: But why did Biden win? The reason I don’t accept that, Biden won.

CHARLAMAGNE: A series of extraordinary circumstances. George Floyd, Covid.

SHARPTON: You don’t think it was extraordinary — no, no, George Floyd and Covid happened and so did 34 felonies. We saw that this is the only time we’ve seen in American history of a man stand up in court having to defend himself and attacking Black prosecutors. He went after Alvin Bragg. He went After Tish James. And the fact is that Donald Trump was the president when George Floyd happened. I did George Floyd’s funerals, led the big marching. We could not get a peep out of the White House. So that don’t wash with me. When you’re standing there saying this man was president during Covid and told y’all to drink bleach, was president when George Floyd [died] and never opened his mouth other than one time, walked across the street from the White house to the church and held the Bible upside down and reprimanded the protesters. We all got amnesia in two years?
