Louisville police on Wednesday dropped the charges against professional golfer Scottie Scheffler stemming from his arrest at the PGA Championship.
Scheffler was arrested two weeks ago as he arrived at Valhalla Golf Club for the second round of the tournament. Prior to his arrival, a pedestrian was killed in an accident and traffic going into the club was stopped. Although police were letting golfers in to prepare for the day, Scheffler was aggressively stopped when he attempted to drive forward. In a video released by police, Scheffler explained his side to an officer and claimed he was unaware that the man instructing him to stop his car was with the police. That man, Detective Bryan Gillis, reached inside the car and struck Scheffler to get him to stop.
According to a police report and the words from the officer Scheffler spoke to, Gillis was dragged on the ground by the car and was hospitalized with injuries.
For the incident, Scheffler was charged with reckless driving, assault of an officer, criminal mischief, and disregarding signals from officers directing traffic.
Louisville radio host Terry Meiners reported in the morning the charges would be dropped later in the day. Additionally, an agreement has been reached between Scheffler and the police department to not pursue “any legal action related to the ramifications of the May 17 arrest.”
