WNBA star Brittney Griner denied that she referred to Caitlin Clark as a “fucking white girl” at the end of a recent game.
In late May, the Atlanta Dream took on the Indiana Fever. At the end of that game, Griner — who plays for the Dream — fouled out after she was called for contact on Clark. Because that call game in the final moments of a close game, Griner naturally argued the call with the referee.
After speaking her mind to the officials, Griner took her seat on the team’s bench. The broadcast then went to a close-up of Griner on the bench, where she continued making her frustration known. Although the words weren’t audible, some social media lip readers believed that Griner mouthed the words “trash” and “fucking white girl” in reference to Clark. Others disputed that interpretation and argued that Griner actually said “fucking wack call.”
Following the Dream’s Sunday game against the Washington Mystics, OutKick’s Dan Zaksheske asked Griner for clarification on the moment:
ZAKSHESKE: You said you didn’t remember what you said during that viral moment after you fouled out against the Indiana fever. A lot of people believe what you said was, “F-ing white girl,” or “F-ing white girls.” Is it possible that’s what you said?
GRINER: No, would never say that. Like, there’s no place for that in our league. Would’t say that. I was mad about a call.
ZAKSHESKE: So, even though you can’t remember, you know that that was not what you said?
GRINER: I know it wasn’t that because I wouldn’t use that type of language.
