Chiefs Take the Lead in Super Bowl LVIII After Wild Punt Return Fumble by 49ers
The Kansas City Chiefs took their first lead in Super Bowl LVIII after the San Francisco 49ers fumbled a punt return to set them up within striking distance late in the third quarter.
With less than three minutes left in the third quarter, the Chiefs punted the ball to the 49ers down 10-6. As the ball landed back on the field, it took an unfortunate bounce and hit a 49ers player on the leg. The punt returner — Ray-Ray McCloud III — noticed it and tried to dive for the live ball. It bounced off his hands and the Chiefs recovered shortly after.
On the very next play, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Marquez Valdes-Scantling. After the PAT field goal, the Chiefs led 13-10. It was the team’s first lead in the game.
On the ensuing drive, the 49ers retook the lead on a touchdown pass to Jauan Jennings.
