Ex-NFL Player David Carr Ripped to Shreds for Saying the Eagles Should Bench Star QB Jalen Hurts: ‘THE Worst Sports Take Of All-Time’

Former NFL quarterback David Carr felt the full fury of the internet Tuesday night when he boldly suggested the Philadelphia Eagles should bench star QB Jalen Hurts.

The Eagles earned their second loss of the season in embarrassing fashion when they were dominated 42-19 by the visiting San Francisco 49ers. Although the Eagles are still in sole possession of the league’s best record, pundits have begun sounding the alarm on issues that could hurt the team’s chances of making another deep playoff run.

One of those issues is the health of Hurts. For most of the season, the 25-year-old has dealt with a lingering knee injury that has hindered his ability to run with the same efficiency he had last season.

On Tuesday, Carr appeared on NFL Total Access and said the Eagles should bench Hurts to rest him. He then took things a step further by claiming Marcus Mariota — Hurts’ backup — is better at reading defenses anyway.

“Clearly, Jalen isn’t comfortable reading through a defense in a drop-back pass scenario,” Carr said. “Some would say he’s not even good at it.

“I’d say he’s probably better at playing quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles right now. He would be more productive.”

That didn’t go over well on Twitter, with more than a few members of the media calling Carr out.

Some also claimed that because Carr criticized Hurts’ ability to read defenses, he was reinforcing the racist trope that black players aren’t smart enough to play the position. That philosophy — as Shannon Sharpe has noted — plagued the league for most of the 20th century.
