Mike Francesa Tears Into NY Mets for Missing Playoffs in Disastrous Collapse: ‘Bunch of Gutless Bums!’

Mike Francesa on Sunday went off on the New York Mets after their season-ending loss capped off a disastrous collapse that saw the team miss the playoffs.

The Mets took on the Miami Marlins on Sunday afternoon in their final regular season game. To secure a spot in the postseason as a wildcard team, they needed to win. Unfortunately, the team couldn’t even muster a single run and lost, 4-0. The Marlins improved to 79-83.

Making the loss especially humiliating was the fact that the Mets were the owners of the best record in all of baseball prior to the All-Star break. At one point standing at 45-24, the team finished the regular season at just 83-79.

During an episode of The Mike Francesa Podcast taped moments after the Mets’ crushing loss, the host called the team a “bunch of gutless bums.”

“I never thought they’d win the division for months now,” Francesa said, “but I never thought they wouldn’t make the playoffs. I never thought they would be this gutless. I never thought that they would not figure it out to this extent. I never thought their pitching would dissolve as badly as it did — but not just their pitching. They were a top-heavy lineup all year. They became a bad defensive team; they became a bad situational team; and they became a bunch of gutless bums! That’s what they were down the stretch. There’s no other way to categorize it.”
