Star NFL receiver Odell Beckham Jr. made it clear he wasn’t retiring after thousands of fans fell for a fake tweet claiming he was.

On Tuesday, NFL fans on X/Twitter were stunned when ESPN insider Adam Schefter announced that Beckham was walking away from the sport after 10 seasons. Beckham, a three-time Pro Bowl selection and winner of the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year award in 2014, was one of the league’s best receivers before a string of major injuries hindered his production.

The problem with that report is that it didn’t really come from Schefter. Though the account used a similar profile picture as the real Schefter, the display name was “Adam Schelfer” and the handle was @AdamSche1fer. The thousands who responded to the tweet fell for an obvious fake.

Hours later, Odell confirmed with a tweet of his own that he was not retiring.

“Not done yet,” He said. “Thanks for hr concerns and have a blessed day.”

About an hour later, Beckham returned to X to remind everyone that the news was indeed fake. He also revealed that he’d been receiving texts from those who had been duped.

“No seriously,” Beckham said. “Plz stop reading everything on the internet, and stop texting me happy retirement b4 u piss me off. That will get no response. I promise u the day I’m done I will let u kno. Again if u text me happy retirement im just gon have to block u. Thanks.”
