Phillies Announcer References Titanic During Home Run Call — on Anniversary of Shipwreck Disaster
Philadelphia Phillies announcer Ruben Amaro Jr. made a reference to the sinking of the Titanic — on its anniversary — while calling a home run on Monday.
The Phillies on Monday night hosted the San Francisco Giants. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the team trailed the Giants 6-3 with outfielder Nick Castellanos at the plate. On a hitter-friendly 3-1 count, Castellanos took the fifth pitch of the at-bat deep to left field for a solo homer.
“And a high fly ball to deep left-center field!” play-by-play announcer Tom McCarthy said. “That one is gone! Home run for Castellanos. It’s his third of the year. It’s his second RBI of the game. It’s a two-run ballgame.
Amaro then made the reference to the early 20th century disaster.
AMARO: Did not hang one to Bryce Harper, but he hung one to Nick Castellanos; and Nick did exactly what you’re supposed to do with it — especially the way that he’s swinging the bat. That is a titanic blast. Too much?
MCCARTHY: No, I think you’re right on it!
Amaro likely didn’t realize it at the time, but his comments came on the 113th anniversary of the moment of the RMS Titanic struck ice on its transatlantic voyage from England to New York. The collision occurred late on April 14, with the sinking occurring just a few hours later on the morning of April 15.
