Scottie Scheffler’s Lawyer Spars With Reporter in Heated Exchange After Charges Dropped: ‘That’s Why You Don’t Talk to the Police!’

After the charges against pro golfer Scottie Scheffler were dropped, Scheffler’s lawyer called out the police in a tense exchange with a reporter.

Scheffler was arrested two weeks ago when he tried entering Valhalla Golf Club for the second round of the PGA Championship in Louisville, Kentucky. Due to a fatal accident occurring earlier in the morning, the entrance was blocked for everyone but the golfers competing in the tournament. As Scheffler drove in, an officer reached into his car and instructed him to stop. Police also claimed the officer was dragged on the ground and went to hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Scheffler’s charges included assault of an officer and reckless driving.

On Wednesday, it was reported that the charges against him had been dropped as the two sides sought to resolve the matter “amicably.”

While addressing the media, Scheffler’s lawyer Steve Romines criticized the police for the its treatment of his client. He also had a fiery back-and-forth with a reporter who suggested Scheffler’s account of events don’t align with the statement Romines made.

“No, here’s what happened,” Romines told her. “He is being interrogated after the most stressful situation of his life; and an officer is actually asking him leading questions and trying to get him to agree with them. And that’s why you don’t talk to the police because they are going to try to put words in your mouth! That’s exactly what they did!”

The reporter, identified as Natalia Martinez of WAVE News, noted how Scheffler was read his Miranda rights and had the choice to not speak at all.

“He didn’t have to speak,” Romines said, “but again, he asked to talk to the officer! He wanted to explain to him what happened; however, they are trying to get him to confess to something that he didn’t do, and the video evidence shows he didn’t do it!”
