‘Somebody Hit the Wrong Button!’ College Basketball Championship Game Stopped by Confetti Falling During Play

A men’s college basketball on Sunday game was briefly halted when confetti began falling from the ceiling while play was still going on.

Two minutes into the second half of the Atlantic 10 championship between Duquesne University and Virginia Commonwealth University, the teams were in the middle of playing when the confetti suddenly came raining down. Some players noticed it and started pointing up.

Known for his ability to make even the most mundane situations exciting, announcer Kevin Harlan’s call went exactly as one would expect.

“Oh my gosh, they’ve got confetti falling right now!” he said. “Confetti is falling on the floor. They’re gonna have to stop play. We can’t see our notes! The players can’t work on this court! Confetti is everywhere! Somebody hit the wrong button!”

Fans in the crowd began cheering at the ridiculous nature of the stoppage.

As noted by analyst Dan Bonner, the majority of the confetti landed in the crowd. Because so little was on the court, the stoppage didn’t last long as venue staff swept it off.

Still, Harlan couldn’t help but wonder how championship festivities would be handled with less confetti at their disposal.

“That was an early ejection right there,” Harlan said. “They’re gonna have to reload it now for the winner? I mean, my goodness.”
