WATCH: NY Mets Announcer Doesn’t Notice Foul Ball Fly Just Inches Past His Head in Broadcast Booth

New York Mets announcer Keith Hernandez had a hilarious delayed reaction to a foul ball whizzing past his head in the broadcast booth.

In the seventh inning of the Mets’ Thursday night game against against the Baltimore Orioles, Orioles center fielder Cedric Mullins got a piece of a pitch from Mets reliever Rico Garcia. The foul ball soared high and right behind home plate.

“Cedric Mullins fouls one back this way,” SNY play-by-play announcer Gary Cohen said. “That went right past Keith’s ear and he never saw it!”

When SNY showed a replay from the booth, Cohen could be seen tracking the flight of the ball with his hands up to potentially catch it. When he realized it would be landing to his right — near Hernandez — he turned to his broadcast partner. Hernandez was completely unaware of the ball at first, then flinched when a split-second later when he presumably heard it hit the ground.

The announcers immediately burst into laughter.

“I mean, we can laugh about it now,” Cohen said, “but if that ball had been just a few feet more to the left, you could’ve been done for the season, or maybe forever! You could’ve been back in the incinerator!”

Hernandez jokingly attributed the delayed reaction to his age.

“My eyes are going on me,” he said, “and my reflexes!”
