WATCH: Rangers-Devils Game Begins With All-Out Brawl as Soon as the Puck Drops
The New York Rangers and the New Jersey Devils wasted no time settling their grievances in Wednesday’s game at Madison Square Garden.
In the final matchup of the season between the two teams, everyone on the ice dropped their gloves as soon as the referee dropped the puck. For the announcers in the booth — and many at home and in attendance — the outcome was widely expected due to a history of bad blood between the teams.
Rangers rookie Matt Rempe is at the center of that bad blood. The 6-foot-7 21-year-old has been ejected in three previous games against the Devils due to a number of controversial hits against his opponents. Naturally, the Devils have taken exception to Rempe’s conduct and began Wednesday’s game with an all-out brawl.
“Now it’s five-on-five!” TNT announcer Brendan Burke said. “[Kurtis MacDermid] and Rempe exchanging blows when everybody has gloves off at the Garden!”

Because the refs were outnumbered, it took them a while to stop everyone.
“There’s only four officials. There’s five fights,” Burke continued. “They’re trying to break up what they can.”
Though four of the fights were broken up, Rempe and MacDermid were still going at it. After a while, the two were visibly winded and the refs broke it up without any trouble.
Of the 10 players that fought, eight were immediately ejected. Jimmy Vesey of the Devils and Curtis Lazar of the Rangers were not ejected because they were determined to be the first fight. The others were considered “secondary altercations.”
