WATCH: Tampa Bay Rays Hitter Has to Be Held Back by Small Army After Absolutely Losing It on Umpire Over Ejection
Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Taylor Walls had to held back by multiple people Sunday when he lost it on an umpire in response to his ejection.
With the Rays trailing the Houston Astros 1-0, Walls stepped into the batter’s box in the ninth inning with one out and no one on base. Astros closing pitcher Josh Hader started the at-bat with a low and away slider that, according to the broadcast strike zone, was a ball. Walls took the pitch, but the home plate ump called it a strike.
A frustrated Walls had some words for the ump before getting back in the box and preparing for the next pitch. When he tapped the crown of his helmet as he got back into his stance, however, the ump ejected him. The ump explained to him that he tossed him for the helmet tap.
“No, no, no, no, no!” Walls said. “Tap what? Tap what? I didn’t tap shit!”
As Walls argued the ejection, Rays manager Kevin Cash got between them to give the ump an earful himself. Walls, now incensed by the call, continued screaming at the ump and pointing in his face. Another ump came over to pull Walls away from the scene. Then, multiple members of the Rays staff came over to hold Walls back.
Walls continued yelling as he was escorted into the dugout by his teammates, but suddenly, he broke free and ran back to the ump to argue even more. He was again pulled away by teammates and finally taken into the clubhouse.
During spring training, the MLB tested out a system that allowed batters to challenge calls made by the home plate ump. To signal a request for a challenge, batters would tap their helmets. At the time of writing, the system was not officially in the MLB; so the helmet tap was viewed by umpires as the batter’s way of telling them they missed a call.
